About Relief Works

  1. Who is ReliefWorks? People who DO Something

ReliefWorks (http://www.Relief-Works.com) is a unique initiative that promotes local relief causes through Islamic music, arts, and inspiration - in pursuit of Divine pleasure through beauty, excellence, and service of God's creation.

  2. Why ReliefWorks: The Opportunity

As a Muslim community, we have a responsibility to our communities, society, humanity, and all God's creation. Muslims have to be at the forefront of efforts for the promotion of good and in providing relief and assistance wherever there is need.

However, we find a sense of isolation and alienation in our communities, and a lack of programs to make Muslims--especially the young studens and new professionals, those with energy, time, passion, and skills--engaged and inspired in relief efforts.

Such activism is a concern that the wider Muslim community can be aspired to engage in, and would give people disconnected with their faith and its teachings a renewed sense of the relevance and transformative impact of the teachings of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Islamic activism and outreach can't be limited to a small subset of our large and diverse community.

  3. What will ReliefWorks do? Something Meaningful

ReliefWorks raises funds and awareness for local relief causes through online campaigns, and on-the-ground lecture/concert events. Its efforts are rooted in the Greater Toronto Area, but it has begun to create an impact in communities across North America, and even as far away as Australia. We look forward to continued growth in other parts of the world as well.

Our focus is on local relief causes such as addressing homelessness, hunger, poverty, and violence against women & children, and we seek to directly assist the work of Muslim and non-Muslim groups engaged in such efforts - rather than reinventing the wheel or duplicating the work of others.

The benefit of this is clear: Contributing to local relief efforts and making a difference in the lives of the community at large, makes Muslim communities relevant to the communities at large, thus addressing alienation and isolation.

Selecting and promoting artistic and musical content that connects with and is relevant to the target demographic, and promoting relief efforts through it, provides us with a very effective way of engaging this demographic (primary: 25-35 years old young professionals, secondary: 15-25 years old high school and university students) towards activism for local relief efforts.

Planning and holding events such as concerts of Islamic music where proceeds are going towards relief efforts will draw out people from the target demographic who may not necessarily realize the importance of gaining Islamic knowledge. This creates an opportunity for a tasteful promotion of learning opportunities in Islamic knowledge. Also, events in a lecture/concert format allow for the opportunity to further inspire attendees towards increasing their knowledge of their spiritual tradition.

  4. Where is ReliefWorks going? Prospects for Growth

Up till now, we haven’t seen another company or organization engaged in a similar effort, catering to traditional orthodox Muslims anywhere in the world. As such, we anticipate strong growth initially in primarily English-speaking markets with a sizeable Muslim presence, such as the US, the UK, South Africa, Australia, and Canada. We anticipate the second wave of growth in areas of larger Muslim population, such as South Asia, South East Asia, and the Middle East.
